Jeff Garcia does better coming in to the season as a backup and starting. With poor performances with Cleveland and Detroit where he started from the get go, and strong performances in Philadelphia and Tampa Bay as becoming the starter later in the season, San Francisco was no exception but his success continued from the time he was anointed as starter the first time. It seems like when Garcia plays with a chip on his shoulder he is much more effective. I think John Gruden knows this and started Griese in the beginning of the season to pump Garica up and then start him. Garcia is clearly the better QB, but the benefit of getting an angry Garcia 5 games in to the season with having the luxury of a good D and a serviceable QB to tide them over in the meantime, proved to be worth the wait in Gruden’s eyes.
